Want to help the planet AND have fun with your friends? Here’s an easy way to play a cool sorting game that teaches about the 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. You’ll learn how to sort waste properly and work as a team—let’s get started!
Why it’s important to reduce waste, reuse things, and recycle.
How to tell different types of waste apart (like paper, plastic, glass, and food scraps).
How to take care of the Earth in your everyday life.
How to work as a team to solve problems.
Clean, empty waste items (examples: plastic bottle, newspaper, banana peel, glass jar).
3–4 bins or boxes with labels:
Paper
Plastic
Organic (food waste)
Glass
A timer or stopwatch (if you want to make it a race!)
A small whiteboard or paper to keep score (optional)
Gloves (optional, but good for keeping hands clean)
1. Set Up the Game Area
Put all your clean “trash” in small mixed piles—one pile for each team.
Put the labeled bins at the other end of your space (a room or outdoor area is perfect!).
2. Make Teams
Split your friends into small teams (3–5 players in each).
3. Explain the Rules
Tell everyone:
You’ll take turns running to put an item in the right bin.
Try to be fast but also correct!
Don’t throw items—place them in carefully.
4. Start the Game!
Say “Ready, Set, Go!” and start the timer (if using).
Each person picks one item at a time and runs it to the correct bin. Then the next player goes!
5. Check the Results
When all items are sorted, look in each bin with your friends.
Did they get it right? You can give 1 point for each correct item and bonus points for teamwork or speed!
6. Clean Up
Put the trash into real recycling and garbage bins so nothing is left behind.
This game is fun and teaches you to protect the planet. You can even play it again and switch teams or use different items next time.
